In 2008 FHM Magazine is considered the UKs leading example of the Lad’s Mag. The first ever issue of FHM was published in 1985 and was entitled ‘For Him Magazine’ Back then the focus of the magazine wasn’t all drinking and scantily clad women, the rise of the Lads Culture was still a few years away, instead the early days of FHM focused on Style and Fashion and was distributed mainly through the contemporary fashion outlets of the time. In 1987 the the publishers began to see the potential in For Him magazine and Newsagent distribution was arranged on quarterly basis. But it wasn’t until the emergence of Loaded Magazine in 1994 that things really began to change for FHM.
A new blueprint was emerging for a magazine aimed at young men focusing on beautiful women, drinking, sport and humour. ‘For Him’ quickly became FHM and the publication schedule was switched from quarterly to monthly. This easily accessible take on the Lad culture quickly began to establish FHM as the best selling Lads Magazine of the nineties and it went to be produce international editions in 28 countries to date. Regular features such as the ‘World top 100 Sexiest Women’ and the more recently introduced ‘High Street Honeys’ have helped to cement FHM at the top of the Lads Mag pile for the last 14 years, even though the demand for such magazines has waned since its peak in 1999 when FHM reputedly shifted 700,000 copies a month.
